Winter Solstice 2012, A New Beginning

Today is the Winter Solstice and the end of the 5125-year cycle of the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar.  Contrary to many idle speculations, there’s little evidence that the Mayans regarded the end of the cycle as the end of the world. They recognized such cycles prior to this one, so presumably would expect the world to cycle on.

There is, however, plenty of evidence that they regarded the end of a millennia long cycle as cause for celebration.  And so may we.  May the next cycle find us all a little wiser and happier.  Happy winter solstice!  Let the parties begin!
